For more than a decade I have been writing exclusively on issues related to the needs and future of autistic adults. The journey started when our son was diagnosed with autism at age three and accepting the fact that there were limited resources available at that time. The first major decision that changed our lives as parents was homeschooling our son after failed attempts to enroll him in a regular classroom. While he excelled in some subjects, socialization was a struggle along with managing anxiety issues. During the past decade, our world has changed on many levels, including a broader acceptance of autism spectrum disorders. However, there still is a tremendous need to educate those around us about autism as myths and stereotypes are very much a part of our culture. When we view the autism community, it is important to remember the individuals within the group are very different in terms of abilities, experiences, and personalities. Moreover, goals also vary as related to relationships and employment options that are aligned with neurodivergent perspectives.
