First, the technology behind autonomous cars is nothing short of amazing. The potential applications for the residential, healthcare, and educational sectors are virtually unlimited. Importantly, living independent lives remains the goal for autistic adults moving forward. The sentiment for parents of adult children on the autism spectrum yearns for a care solution that addresses financial, educational, health, and residential concerns. With retirement and personal health challenges looming, parents of autistic adult children are worried. They wonder what will happen to their children when they’re gone.
The time has come for us to recalibrate our attitudes related to technology and its impact on people with special needs. Rather than viewing tech as cold and sterile, new developments are underway to build robots that display sentimentality. The very thought of emotional robots admittedly takes some getting used to. For many autistic adults, the predictability and consistency provided by personal robots will prove immeasurable. Companionship will no longer be limited to the imagination of the autistic person, but will become a daily reality presented in a non-judgmental manner. Increased independence is within reach for millions as a result of this amazing technology. The change is coming and we have to prepare for a brave new world that includes robots among us.
